Teaching
Courses Regularly Offered at AUP:
- Introduction to Computer Programming I - Introduces the field of computer science and the fundamental concepts of programming from an object-oriented perspective using the programming language Java. Starts with practical problem-solving and leads to the study and analysis of simple algorithms, data types, control structures, and use of simple data structures such as arrays and strings. Offered every semester - undergraduate level.
- Data Science: Methods and Context - (video presentation) This project-based course introduces data science by looking at the whole cycle of activities involved: data acquisition, cleaning, management, analysis, presentation and preservation. We will consider the challenges involved in, for example, “asking good questions”, “appropriately collecting data”, “telling a compelling and useful data-based story”. We will explore the ethical questions posed by many data science related endeavors while also practicing skills and using tools for manipulating data. - Offered in Spring - undergraduate level.
- Human Computer Interaction - Introduces theories of human-computer interaction and analyses human factors related to the design, development, and use of Information Systems. Students will apply these theories with examples of design, implementation, and evaluation of multimedia user interfaces. The subject of this course is inherently interdisciplinary and the students attending the course normally represent several majors. Offered evry other Fall - undergraduate level.
- Human Rights and Digital Technology - This course joins two disciplines – law and science – in an attempt to understand more fully the dense, multidimensional nature of the digital revolution and how we are going to live with it. The application of a human rights framework is extremely useful in highlighting many of the connected aspects of this technological transition. The course is an interdisciplinary primer, a guide to examining the critical issues that shape our use of digital technology; by elaborating specific case studies, we ground our general arguments in lived experiences across diverse geographic contexts. - Offered periodically - graduate and undergraduate levels.
Here is more information on other courses I have taught at AUP and elsewhere. Many of my courses include a project component, here is some sample work produced by students in my classes. |
