Backbone |
A
high-speed line or series of connections that forms a major pathway
within a network. |
Bandwidth |
How
much information you can send through a connection. Ususually measured
in bits-per-second. A fast modem can move about 57 000 bits in one
second. |
Baud |
The
baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second. |
Binary |
Information
consisting entirely of ones and zeros. Also, commonly used to refer
to files that are not simply text files. e.g. images. |
Bit |
A
single digit number in base-2, i.e. either a one or a zero. The smallest
unit of computerised data. |
Bitmap |
Representation, consisting of rows and columns of dots, of a graphics
image in computer memory. The value of each dot (whether it is filled
in or not) is stored in one or more bits of data. |
Blog |
A
journal available on the web, usually updated daily. |
BPS |
Bits-per-Second,
a measurement of how fast data is moved from one place to another. |
Browser |
Short
for Web browser, a software application used to locate and display
Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. |
