Glossary of Terms

 
Backbone
A high-speed line or series of connections that forms a major pathway within a network.
Bandwidth
How much information you can send through a connection. Ususually measured in bits-per-second. A fast modem can move about 57 000 bits in one second.
Baud
The baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second.
Binary
Information consisting entirely of ones and zeros. Also, commonly used to refer to files that are not simply text files. e.g. images.
Bit
A single digit number in base-2, i.e. either a one or a zero. The smallest unit of computerised data.
Bitmap
Representation, consisting of rows and columns of dots, of a graphics image in computer memory. The value of each dot (whether it is filled in or not) is stored in one or more bits of data.
Blog
A journal available on the web, usually updated daily.
BPS
Bits-per-Second, a measurement of how fast data is moved from one place to another.
Browser
Short for Web browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
