TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
AT THE
COGNITIVE SCIENCE LAB
INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
HYDERABAD (INDIA)

 

A collaborative program allowing AUP’s Computer Science students to work at the Cognitive Science Lab of the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (India) to complete a “technology and social engagement” project. While at the Cognitive Science Lab, students will work under the guidance and supervision of researchers at the lab and they will have ample opportunities to learn and exchange about the research performed there.

Research areas:

  • cognitive modeling of aesthetics and its applications to layout and interface design,
  • understanding and modeling visual metaphors,
  • developing cognition and communicative assistive tools for children with learning difficulties like dyslexia and autism,
  • understanding and modeling human visual processing system

It is also possible to focus on a problem not listed here after discussion with the faculty member.


How to apply

This is a selective program and, in order to participate, students are required to:

  • Have a minimal GPA of 3.2, with at least 3.4 in CS courses
  • Submit a declaration of interest including the following details:
    • The area of CS study that they would like to work on possibly with an indication of how they see this as being related to the activities of the Cognitive Science Lab
    • Any indicative preference in terms of the social engagement project they would like to undertake (e.g. working for children, elderly, rural communities, etc.)
    • The length of time that they would like to spend at the Cognitive Science Lab (which should range from 3 weeks to 2 months). Please do note that longer stays are preferred.
    • The period when they would like to go

Depending on the specificity of the project, its length, and students’ class standing and GPA, some students will be given the choice to register this activity as an internship or as part of the CS honors program. 

Some Logistical Details: A round trip air ticket can cost anything from €500 to €1000 depending on the airline and routing. The cost of living on campus is relatively low: for about €200 a month you can live quite comfortably on campus. You will be advised about travel and visa details after the selection.
